The Institute of Plumbing
Founded in 1906 and the UK's only professional institute for plumbers the Institute of Plumbing holds 11,000 plus members. All the members have all had to prove their competence through recognised qualifications or extensive experience, and agree to a 5-Point Code of Professional Standards.

The plumbers institute UK's membership includes domestic plumbers, to designers, plumbing engineers, merchants, manufacturers and teachers. The Institute is a registered educational charity whose principal aim is to improve the standards of plumbing and plumbing engineering in the public interest. To this end, it works closely with Government, manufacturers, industry bodies and consumer organisations to ensure that legislation, product development and codes of practice embrace this aim.

The Institute publishes an annual directory of its members in business which is sent free to libraries, Citizen's Advice Bureaux and Trading Standards Officers. The information contained therein is also on the institutes two websites as above.

The Plumbers Institute UK and Heating Engineering's definition of plumbing is:

"Work associated with the provision of water supply pipework including that used for fire fighting; all forms of space heating, gas installation, sanitary appliances, discharge pipework and drainage; the weathering of structures and buildings."

The Different Plumbers
Plumbing covers a large area, some plumbers deal with piped systems for water such as fitting bathrooms, radiators and sprinkler systems etc. Other plumbers install gas central heating systems along with other wet plumbing systems. Some plumbers deal with drainage and small domestic jobs such as leaky taps and blocked sinks.

By law all plumbers and members of the plumbers institute UK must be registered with the Council of Registered Gas Installers (CORGI). whatever area of the industry plumbers choose to work in, they all should be suitably qualified and need extensive knowledge of the Water Regulations (Water Bylaws in Scotland) and the Building Regulations.
